As from April, smoking is not allowed on stage.
In order to clear up any misunderstanding, we have contacted the Assembly Government and the following is the official reply:
"The Assembly’s powers to make regulations prohibiting smoking in enclosed public places derive from the Health Act 2006. The definition of smoking set out in the Act covers “any lit substance”, which includes herbal tobacco. If you are unsure whether the type of imitation cigarette you have in mind for your play will be allowed to be used, you may wish to contact your local authority, who are responsible for enforcing the smoke-free legislation. The contact details for Pembrokeshire County Council are as follows: Jenny Slate - 01437 764551.
Following public consultation last year on the draft Smoke-free Premises etc. (Wales) Regulations 2007, the Welsh Assembly Government decided not to provide an exemption for performers. This applies to any type of performance in a substantially enclosed area, including film studios. The health risks from exposure to second-hand smoke apply in all enclosed settings, and those working in the theatre and in film studios require the same level of protection as other workers. The Assembly Government took the view that provision of an exemption for performers would undermine this health message and would appear unfair to the wider public. "
