Welcome to the PDA

The Pembrokeshire Drama Association aims to promote amateur theatre in West Wales and help to improve the quality of productions through competitions, such as the One Act and Full Length Festivals held each year.

In the past couple of years, we're pleased to have welcomed several new groups to the Pembrokeshire Drama Association - Attic Players from Newcastle Emlyn, Saundersfoot Footlights and Haverfordwest Operatic Society.  If you know of a group who might be interested in joining please contact us, because a vibrant drama scene in West Wales depends on the people who care about good theatre working together and sharing experiences in order to continually raise standards.

HISTORY OF THE PDA

In April and October 1986 representatives of Pembrokeshire Drama Societies were brought together by Mrs Jill Edge of Fishguard for informal meetings to explore the possibilities of co-operation between the Societies.

At a meeting in January 1987 under the guidance of Mr Ron Hadden, the then Director of the Drama Association of Wales, the decision to meet formally was made and the Pembrokeshire Drama Association was born. A constitution was drawn up and the aims of the Association, which were to foster and develop amateur drama in the County by means of workshops, community festivals and productions etc., were set down in print.

Since our formation we have organised adult workshops, a youth theatre workshop (in conjunction with HTV), technical interchange and One-Act Festivals. We have had successful technical workshops in conjunction with the Torch Theatre and a character-developing workshop in association with Theatre Clwyd. Another major achievement was the introduction, in 1993, of a Full-Length play Festival; this runs from April to September each year and enables groups to present their plays in their own venues.

Since 1995, thanks mainly to sponsorship from the Milford Haven Refinery, we have managed to successfully host three Wales One-Act Finals - an important yearly event in the Welsh amateur theatre calendar.

Is your prop gun illegal?

A blank firing pistol commonly used by theatres and film production companies has been declared illegal.  A statement issued by the Metropolitan Police says that the Olympic .380 BBM, also known as the Bruni Olympic Revolver - Blank Firer, the Olympic 9mm, the Olympic .380 and the Olympic .38, has been recently identified as "readily convertible", which means it can easily be converted into a lethal weapon and so it is now a criminal offence to possess, supply or transfer one in the UK. This does not apply to the Olympic .22 (6mm) blank firing starting pistol.

The possession, supply or transfer of one of these pistols, whether converted or not, will now attract a mandatory five year sentence under the provisions of Section 5 of the Firearms Act 1968. According to the Metropolitan Police, a significant number of thse firearms have been used in criminal activity.  In order for the now illegal (although previously legal) weapons to be withdrawn from circulation, an amnesty is now in force which will allow those in possession of these weapons to hand them in at police station front counters before midnight on 4th June, 2010, without fear of prosecution.

Although possession of these guns was not illegal until last month and they did not previously require a licence, there will be no buy-back scheme.
